Pro Tips and Tricks on How to Add Volume to Your Hair

The one hair complaint we hear about most is a lack of volume. Bigger hair is often seen as better, and unless you’re one of the very few that’s naturally blessed, it can feel like you’ve missed out on fantastic genetics. If flat hair is leaving you feeling, well,… flat, read our expert advice on how to add volume to your hair and take your locks from limp to luscious.

1. Cleanse and Condition with Volumizing Products

For anyone looking to know how to get volume in their hair, the products you use in the shower can make more of a difference than you might think.

Washing your hair well is vital as oils, and product build-up is a fast-track recipe for flat hair when you’ve got fine hair. The Iles Formula Shampoo is infused with the most exclusive, high-performing antioxidant-rich ingredients to gently cleanse the hair, giving you fuller and thicker feeling hair.

Opt for lightweight formulas, as many nourishing products contain a lot of nourishing oils, which are great if your hair is dry and damaged but when potent, hair oils are too heavy for fine hair.

2. Blow Dry – the Right Way

Do you go straight in with the blasting hairdryer?

If you want to know how to get volume in your hair, the best idea is to blow dry your roots upside down, focusing the airflow on your roots, blowing them in the opposite direction to how they should fall. Then flip hair back into position and start blowdrying section by section starting from underneath and finishing on top. The Iles Formula Finishing Serum;  if you apply it to every section on damp hair, the heat will melt the silk in the serum around the hair shaft, and make it feel organically thicker. It will also protect your hair from the heat of the hairdryer, UV, and humidity.

Instead of using a  paddle brush that discourages volume  (this is great for smoothing the hair cuticle, but not so great if you’re looking to add volume, start using a round brush to finish your style.

Prefer to let your hair air dry? The Iles Formula Microfiber Hair Turban Towel will be your best friend. Not only does it naturally dry hair fast due to its fast absorption, but it also prevents your hair from static, frizz, and breakage.

Alternatively, consider twisting your hair into a bun on top of your head overnight.

This technique may be your new go-to get-out bed volume look.

It will lift your hair at the roots, leaving you with big soft waves by the morning. If you want to go with those waves but tame them slightly, check out the Iles Formula Curl Revive, it is formulated to keep those curls sumptuous and beautifully formed.

3. Change up Your Parting

Most of us have a go-to parting where our hair naturally falls, but the hair on either side of this natural part is at its flattest. So, one way to get volume in your hair is to flip your parting over to the other side, so that the hair is more lifted away from the roots which creates instant volume!

If you have a cowlick or your hair doesn’t want to co-operate, you can take some lightweight serum on your hand and use it to smooth the hair into place. Our founder, Wendy Iles, always has her Finishing Serum on hand to create natural and organic texture in hair without any snags. The Iles Formula Finishing Serum is hers and many hairstylists and our customer’s go-to product compared to traditional styling products like hairspray as once hairspray is used, there is very little leeway for you to change the hairstyle again without fighting blocked memory delivered by these kinds of traditional styling products.

Ideally, it would help if you switched up your parting up every so often so that your hair doesn’t become too used to being on one side or the other.

4. Switch Your Curling Wand for Hot Rollers

Are you a curl lover? You might want to trade your curling wand out for something more old-school.

Hot rollers might seem a bit outdated, but they’re fantastic for fine hair. As the curls are rolled upwards from the ends towards your roots and pinned into place, they give you more volume than wands and straighteners, which keep the roots flat.

5. Eat a Balanced Diet

Just like your body, your hair has a healthy and balanced diet filled with vitamins and minerals for longer and thicker hair growth. Powerful foods like spinach, beans, tofu are the key to your body gaining enough iron and zinc which is crucial to promote hair growth. Having iron-rich foods in your diet is important as iron deficiency has been linked to problems such as hair loss which will do the complete opposite of what you want – which is to increase volume in your hair naturally! Protein is also crucial for thick and healthy hair!

See our list of some of the best foods to include in your diet below:

  • Spinach – rich in iron, magnesium, vitamins A and C. Vitamin A helps the skin glands produce your scalp’s natural sebum which moisturizes and keeps the hair healthy.
  • Salmon – a great source of omega-3 fatty acids that is anti-inflammatory and helps to prevent hair shedding.
  • Oatmeal – oats are rich in iron, zinc, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids which stimulate hair growth for thick and healthy hair.
  • Blueberries – filled with antioxidants such as vitamin B that reduces hair loss.
  • Eggs – are full of protein which helps boost collagen production. Collagen surrounds the hair strands so having a healthy cycle of collagen production is crucial to ensuring strands aren’t weak and prone to breakage.
